Is trig substitution necessary? ›

Trig substitution is a somewhat-confusing technique which, despite seeming arbitrary, esoteric, and complicated (at best), is pretty useful for solving integrals for which no other technique we've learned thus far will work.

Trig substitution is appropriate when we have an integrand containing the sum or difference of the squares of a constant and a variable, i.e. one of the forms x2+a2,a2−x2, and x2−a2.

The three commonly used trigonometric substitutions are: Substitute x = a sin θ when the radical expression contains a term of the form a² – x². Substitute x = a tan θ when the radical expression contains a term of the form x² – a². Substitute x = a sec θ when the radical expression contains a term of the form x² + a².

In some sense, the prerequisite for Calculus is to have an overall comfort with algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. After all, each new topic in math builds on previous topics, which is why mastery at each stage is so important.

It's important to have a solid foundation in trigonometry before tackling calculus, as several topics in calculus make use of trigonometric concepts. For example, you'll encounter trigonometric functions when dealing with derivatives, integrals, and limits.

Always do a u-sub if you can; if you cannot, consider integration by parts. A u-sub can be done whenever you have something containing a function (we'll call this g), and that something is multiplied by the derivative of g. That is, if you have ∫f(g(x))g′(x)dx, use a u-sub.

When using the method of trig substitution, we will always use one of the following three well-known trig identities : (I) 1−sin2θ=cos2θ (II) 1+tan2θ=sec2θ and. (III) sec2θ−1=tan2θ

Some of the important integration formulas of trigonometric functions are listed below: ∫sin(x)dx=−cos(x)+C. ∫cos(x)dx=sin(x)+C. ∫tan(x)dx=ln|sec(x)|+C.

According to the substitution method, a given integral ∫ f(x) dx can be transformed into another form by changing the independent variable x to t. This is done by substituting x = g (t). Now, substitute x = g(t) so that, dx/dt = g'(t) or dx = g'(t)dt.
