MLB Opening Day weather updates: Live forecasts, news on rain delays & postponements for all 15 baseball games | Sporting News (2024)

Baseball is back— as long as Mother Nature cooperates.

While some teams have the benefit of an indoor stadium or retractable roof, the start of the season can be a tricky time for franchises who have no choice but to play outdoors. Postponements throughout baseball are all too common in March and April, and weather is already affecting the 2024 season ahead of Opening Day festivities.

There is rain in the forecast for a significant portion of the East Coast, posing a threat to a few Opening Day games on what will otherwise be a celebratory day around the majors.

The Sporting News is tracking weather updates for all 15 scheduled games on Opening Day. Follow along below with the latest information.

MLB Opening Day weather updates

Here's a rundown of the weather conditions for each Opening Day game.

Brewers vs. Mets (1:10 p.m. ET)— Postponed

The Mets were set to host the Brewers in the first stateside game of the regular season, but those plans will have to wait until Friday. The game was postponed on Wednesday due to rain in the forecast throughout Thursday.

The Weather Channel forecasts "periods of rain" in New York from Wednesday night all the way through Thursday evening, leaving no chance of getting the game in. Fortunately, it's set to be mostly sunny in New York for Friday's opener.

This is the second consecutive year in which the Mets' home opener has been postponed.

Braves vs. Phillies (3:05 p.m. ET) — Postponed

Opening Day was set to feature an important matchup between two of the most talented teams in baseball, but the same rain that will impact New York is forecasted to hit Philadelphia. Braves vs. Phillies was formally postponed on Wednesday and rescheduled for Friday afternoon.

The Weather Channel similarly gives Philadelphia a 100-percent chance of receiving periods of rain, beginning Wednesday night.

Angels vs. Orioles (3:05 p.m. ET)

With those postponements, the first stateside game of the 2024 season will be Angels vs. Orioles -- or will it? Baltimore isn't far from Philadelphia, so rain will be in the picture on Thursday. It will come down to whether it clears out of the city in time.

The Weather Channel forecasts rain throughout Wednesday night into Thursday, tapering off between 2-4 p.m. ET on Thursday afternoon. If that forecast holds, the Orioles and Angels could very well get their game with a delay distinctly possible.

Nationals vs. Reds (4:10 p.m. ET)

The Nationals are fortunate to avoid the mess the northeast and mid-Atlantic regions are experiencing on Thursday, as they will play in Cincinnati to start the season.

Temperatures are expected to be in the 50s at Great American Ballpark, with partly sunny conditions in order.

Giants vs. Padres (4:10 p.m. ET)

There are no concerns in San Diego, as usual, with partly cloudy conditions and temperatures in the mid-60s expected on Thursday.

Cardinals vs. Dodgers (4:10 p.m. ET)

Shohei Ohtani's home debut at Dodger Stadium will also have no complications, with conditions expected to mirror San Diego's and winds blowing out to centerfield.

Twins vs. Royals (4:10 p.m. ET)

It's expected to be sunny with temperatures in the mid-60s for Thursday's opener between the Twins and Royals, though it will be breezy with 15-mph winds.

Tigers vs. White Sox (4:10 p.m. ET)

It will be much colder in Chicago, with temperatures hovering near 45 degrees, but no rain is in the forecast for what should be a pitching-friendly day at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Guardians vs. Athletics (10:07 p.m. ET)

Is this the last Opening Day in Oakland? Only time will tell, but the A's and Guardians are set to get the game in on Thursday unless the forecast dramatically shifts.

It's set to be cloudy with temperatures in the high 50s, though rain and wind on Friday could put the second game of the season at risk.

Indoor games

Six Opening Day games will be played in stadiums that are either completely indoors or have a retractable roof, ensuring they won't have to worry about weather conditions on Thursday. Some will still be played with the roof open if the conditions are ideal.
